6 Benefits of Clove Oil in Gut & Skin Health

Uncategorized Aug 07, 2021

Clove oil offers many health benefits, some of which include bloating prevention, parasite killing, pain relief, and clear skin.   It contains anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-microbial properties, and allllso aphrodisiac properties!

The clove plant is indigenous to Indonesia (where I call home) and Madagasca (just off the coast of Africa - my birth home).

So I knew I loved Clove Oil already.   Now love it even more.

Clove is one of my favourite herbs to have in my arsenal when I am treating someone for parasites.

It has two latin names: Eugenia caryophyllata and Syzgium aromaticum.  It's buds are picked by hand and then dried until brown.

They are then crushed and converted into essential oil for our medicinal purposes, and powder for cooking purposes.

From it's introduction to China around 2000 years ago it is now used quite extensively in Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine as well as my Western Herbal Medicine.`

Certain bioactive compounds have been isolated from clove extracts.  Some of them include flavonoids, hexane, methylene chloride, ethanol, thymol, eugenol, benzene and phenolic acids.

It's these compounds that do the work in the clove oil.

(Just an FYI, the clove oil is in the herb.  So you're still getting clove oil even if you're taking it in tablet form.)

With scientific research to back it up, here's 5 studies I collected from my favourite scientific database PubMeb:

Microbicide activity of clove essential oil (Eugenia caryophyllata)

Anti-inflammatory activity of clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) essential oil in human dermal fibroblasts.

Antimicrobial activity of clove oil and its potential in the treatment of vaginal candidiasis.

The chemical composition and biological activity of clove essential oil, Eugenia caryophyllata (Syzigium aromaticum L. Myrtaceae): a short review.

Clove Extract Inhibits Tumor Growth and Promotes Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis

So lets talk about the uses and benefits of this wonderful plant.

Benefits & Uses of Clove Essential Oil:

1. Clove Oil Kills Parasites

Yeah, smash em!

Cloves contain the most powerful germicidal agent in the herbal kingdom, eugenol.   This compound along with caryophyllene travels through the blood stream killing parasites, parasite larvae as well as parasite eggs.

Cloves are awesome at killing malaria, tuberculosis, cholera, scabies and other parasites, viruses, bacteria and fungi, including Candida.

It also destroys all species of Shigella, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus.

Go Cloves!

2. Clove Oil Kills Mould and Fungus

Cloves actually kill the spores of mould, and this makes it fantastic as a mould remover.

Study on Cloves and Fungi slaying here.

Other mould removers just tend to bleach and hide the spores.   So even if you can no longer see the mould because it's bleached, it's likely to grow back in a few days.

This is bad because mould exposure poses a bunch of health risks, big ones being allergies and asthma problems.

If you'd like to rustle up a little home remedy:

  1. First clean your surfaces with a mixture of 4 litres of hot water, 1 tablespoon bicarb of soda and half a cup of vinegar.
  2. Then, mix a quarter teaspoon of clove oil per litre of water.
  3. Put it in a spray bottle, lightly mist on mouldy surface.
  4. Leave for 20 minutes and wipe off.
  5. Spray again and leave.  It will take between 24-48 hours for the mould spores to dry and drop off.

3. Clove Oil Can Prevent Bloating and Indigestion

Same with a few aromatic herbs actually.

Cloves help us with our digestion by stimulating the release of digestive enzymes.   Our digestive enzymes help us to break down our food in the digestive tract so that we can then absorb it into our blood stream.

Usually the quicker this absorption happens the better, especially in cases of IBS & SIBO where if the food isn't broken down properly it can aggravate the intestines and feed the bacterial overgrowth.

This can definitely cause and/or worsen bloating.

4.  Clove Oil Can Help Clear Acne

One major cause of acne is the colonization and infection of clogged pores with bacteria.

Lovely.

Cloves have the greatest anti-microbial ability over the bacteria E. coli and also over Staph aureus, the guys that often cause acne.

So working internally on your gut, with herbs like clove for example, can help to reduce inflammation and infection.

And then externally I have another little home remedy for you:

  1. Mix 3 drops clove oil with 2 tsp raw honey.
  2. Use to wash your face.

5.  Clove Oil as a Natural Anti-inflammatory

That wonderful Eugenol I mentioned earlier?

Studies have confirmed that this eugenol has the ability to reduce pain by stimulating pain receptors.

Use clove oil to massage sore muscles.  Can also be used with arthritis and rheumatism.

6.  Inhibits Pain - very effective with toothaches

Clove Oil instead of an injection?

I'll take it!

The Journal of Dentistry published a study in 2006 proving that clove essential oil had the same numbing effect as benzocaine, a topical agent commonly used before needle insertion.

You can dab some on a cotton ball and place on your sooth tooth.

Added benefit of having the clove oil pull out any infection.

So there have 7 wonderful benefits and uses for Cloves.

Aren't Cloves fabulous?!

Parasites, however, are not!
