Why Your Gut Isn't Healing... Even Though You're Doing Everything Right

It can be one of the most frustrating experiences to be putting in so much time, effort, and often money into trying to heal your gut, but feel like you're not actually moving forward. Maybe you're even going two steps back.

You might have followed specific protocols, tried all the diets, worked through the supplements. And your gut still isn't where you want it to be. At some point you start to wonder whether this is just how it is now, and whether you need to make peace with it.

You don't.

It's not that nothing works. It might just be that you haven't yet found what actually needs to happen for your body. The body has an amazing capacity to heal when it's given the right environment and the right ingredients to do so. I believe that every body can heal. And I say that having been on the other side of this myself.

My Own Experience

I struggled with digestive issues for most of my life. When I was finally diagnosed with SIBO back in 2016, it was a double-edged sword. On one hand, I had an answer for all those years of struggling. On the other, everything I was reading made it sound like SIBO was very hard, if not almost impossible, to treat properly.

That wasn't true. I was just looking for answers in the wrong places at the time.

There was a point where I genuinely believed my body was past the point of no return. It was a very dark time. Today I'm healthy, I'm happy, and I don't experience any digestive issues at all. I have the physical energy to work out and do the things I love. I have the emotional energy to actually participate in my life. The world is a very different experience when you're living in a healthy body.

And I think when you've been unwell for a long time, especially if it's been years, you can forget what it actually feels like to feel good. That becomes your normal. It doesn't have to be.

Why Things Haven't Worked So Far

After years in clinic, I've seen a lot of protocols that people have been trying before finding us. And what I notice is that many of them have parts that could be genuinely helpful. But very rarely do I see someone who has been struggling and has done everything correctly, in the right order, at the right dosages, for long enough.

Sometimes someone is doing the right thing but at too low a dose. Sometimes the dose is right but they haven't continued long enough to make real headway. They're scratching the surface, getting a little relief, but never quite breaking through to actually get better and stay better.

The other piece that's almost always missing is the whole picture. When you focus on treating the symptoms without digging into why those symptoms are there in the first place, they tend to come back. You have to reverse engineer things. What happened in your body? What broke down to allow these symptoms to show up? When you heal those underlying causes, the symptoms resolve on their own, without needing 85 different supplements and a complicated protocol that changes every six weeks.

What Actually Needs to Happen

What needs to happen is a thorough assessment of not just your digestive issues, but the rest of your body as well.

If we're just looking at the digestive system, we need to make sure every part of it is working as it should. Your digestive system runs from your stomach through your small and large intestine, but it also involves your liver, your gallbladder, and your pancreas. Every one of these areas plays a role, and if one is letting you down, it affects everything else.

If your liver and gallbladder aren't functioning well, you won't be able to digest fat properly. You might end up constipated. Toxicity levels rise, keeping inflammation going. If your pancreas isn't releasing enough digestive enzymes, food doesn't get broken down well enough before it moves through, and that leads to fermentation, gas, bloating, and more inflammation downstream.

Working from top to bottom, the stomach needs the right amount of acid and digestive juices to start the process properly. In the small intestine, the gut lining needs to be intact, and the villi and microvilli need to be healthy because they're a crucial part of how your body actually absorbs nutrition from the food you eat. In the large intestine, gut integrity matters here too, and this is where your microbiome lives. The balance of bacteria needs to be right. We need to make sure there's no fungal overgrowth or parasites going unaddressed.

And before all of that, the basics need to be working. Bowel motions ideally once to three times a day, and motility through the digestive system needs to be neither too fast nor too slow. If things aren't moving through properly, it doesn't matter how good the rest of your protocol is.

Our Approach at The Gut Clinic

At The Gut Clinic, we've been working with people with complex digestive issues for years and have helped over 1,200 clients worldwide through our online clinic. Our collective clinical knowledge spans decades.

Our signature program is a structured, three-month gut restoration program that's tailored to each individual. We work through all the parts of the digestive system, heal and repair what needs repairing, and rebuild from there. We also look at the coexisting factors that so often get missed: nervous system dysregulation, hormonal imbalances, thyroid conditions, endometriosis. All of these can worsen digestive issues significantly, and no amount of gut-focused treatment will hold if these pieces are being ignored.

The goal is always to keep digging until we find the root cause, and then to heal from there. That's how you get better and stay better, rather than cycling through improvements that never quite last.

If This Sounds Familiar

If you've been working hard at this and things still aren't moving the way they should, it's probably not that your body can't heal. It's more likely that something hasn't been found yet, or the approach hasn't accounted for everything that needs to be in place.

That's exactly what we're here for.

If you'd like to have a conversation before committing to anything, our Discovery Calls are a chance to talk through what's been going on, what you've tried, what's worked and what hasn't, and what our approach would look like for your situation. No treatment advice, no pressure. Just a conversation to figure out whether we're the right fit.
